Happy New Year From StopLeukemia

Dear StopLeukemia Supporters

From all of us at Stopleukemia, we would like to thank you for all of your support in 2011. We also want to wish you and your families a healthy and prosperous new year!

2011 was another exciting step forward for the organization. One major highlight our official partnership with The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. As many of you know, Fred Schneider, Sandy Richton, and Andrew Sarkisian were all treated at Dana Farber. This amazing hospital has had a tremendous impact on all of us and we have been proud to donate the majority of our proceeds to the Office of Patient and Family Assistance; and now to be an official partner with them.

Our annual fundraising event took place in November at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston. It was a huge success raising close to $9,000! Over 150 people attended and helped celebrate the lives of loved ones afflicted with leukemia.

During 2011, we also revamped our website, continued to sell t-shirts, and made a number of donations including Dana Farber Office of Patient and Family Assistance, The Andrew Sarksian Memorial Scholarship Fund, and the Fort Lauderdale Light-the-Night event.

We know the turbulent economy has created challenging times for many of you, so we cannot thank you enough for your continued support in these tough times. StopLeukemia Supporters,
As we wrap up 2010, we'd like to recap some of the achievements of StopLeukemia in its first full year. StopLeukemia has continued to make great strides since the kick-off event at The Vault almost a year and a half ago. Of course, none of this would be possible without the help of the StopLeukemia community.
Our primary fundraising event in 2010 was in conjunction with Rachael Devono-Sarkisian's participation in the 2010 Music City Marathon in Nashville, TN. Rachael, Andy Sarkisian's widow and one of StopLeukemia's inspirations, set a goal of raising $5,000 of behalf of StopLeukemia. Due to Rachael's courage and everyone's tremendous support, she was able to raise over $6,000 of which $5,000 was donated to Dana Farber's Office of Patient and Family Assistance and $1,000 was donated to the Andy Sarkisian Memorial Scholarship Fund. The total donations to these two organizations are now $15,000 and $1,500, respectively, totals that we are very proud of, and you should be as well!   We are truly inspired by Rachael's drive and determination and she is very appreciative of everyone's contributions. Rachael commented on StopLeukemia's Facebook site, "Thanks again for helping me keep Andrew's memory alive!" We'd also like to share a story recently published on boston.com (link to story). Unfortunately, many organizations contribute a limited percentage of total donations to their respective causes. In 2009 approximately 43 cents out of every dollar donated was received by charitable organizations. We at StopLeukemia, however, are thrilled to that since our start in 2009, approximately 80 cents out of every dollar has been donated to one of the two organizations mentioned above, and this percentage is even greater when excluding the sale of StopLeukemia t-shirts. StopLeukemia is devoted to assisting the families that are dealing with leukemia. Your donations are meant to help families with the financial burden of this disease, not to fund the operations of the organization.
Some additional highlights for StopLeukemia in 2010 include the following:
·         The StopLeukemia founders were featured in a recently published book called "Generation Earn: The Young Professional's Guide to Spending, Investing, and Giving Back" authored by Kimberly Palmer. A short adaptation from the book can be found here.
·         StopLeukemia is currently discussing a long-term partnership with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Through this partnership, all future events would be co-sponsored by the two organizations and future donations would continue to be directed to Dana Farber's Office of Patient and Family Assistance.
·         Sandy Richton, one of StopLeukemia's inspirations, celebrated 12 years as a cancer survivor and eight years since her stem cell transplant. Congrats Sandy! We are all inspired by your courage!
StopLeukemia is looking forward to an even more successful 2011. We plan to host another charity event at a local bar/restaurant in Boston during the late Winter/early Spring and are initiating plans for our biggest event yet, a charity golf outing, likely to be held in the Fall. With the help of your donations, Rachael and the StopLeukemia raised over $6,000! This was well above our goal of $5,000. Due to the tremendous success we will be donating $5,000 to the Office of Family and Patient Assistance at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. Today marks the 3 year anniversary of the passing of Andrew Sarkisian, the husband of Rachael Sarkisian and one of StopLeukemia's inspirations. As we celebrate Andrew's life, we thought it would be appropriate to give the final results of a very successful campaign; Rachael's Run . This past Saturday, on what would have been her 6th wedding anniversary, Rachael Sarkisian ran in the Music City Marathon in Nashville, TN in celebration of Andrew's life and in support of StopLeukemia.Org. Due to the weather and a hip injury, Rachael heroically completed the half marathon portion at 2 hours 21 minutes.

Rachael was disappointed she could not complete the full marathon, but we think the weather was Andrew's signal to Rachael to not to hurt herself anymore than she already was.

Most importantly, with the help of so many StopLeukemia supporters, Rachael and the organization raised over $6,000! This was well above our goal of $5,000. Due to the tremendous success we will be donating $5,000 to the Office of Family and Patient Assistance at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. Andrew, along with Fred Schneider and Sandy Richton, received world class support and treatment from Dana-Farber as well as support from the Office of Family and Patient Assistance. This division of Dana-Farber directly impacts those families coping with the many financial impacts leukemia brings and is a great support network for patients and families. The money raised will help patients at Dana Farber with medical expenses, living expenses, meals, etc while they receive treatment.

Rachael’s Run Update

We wanted to share some great news regarding Rachael's Run as we approach mid-April. Rachael Sarkisian, who will be running in the Nashville Music City Marathon on April 24^th (one week from this Saturday), has been receiving a tremendous amount of support towards reaching her goal of raising $5,000 on behalf of StopLeukemia. In fact, over the past nine weeks, Rachael has already beat her goal and raised approximately $5,400!!

With the Music City Marathon ten days away, Rachael is now aiming to eclipse her original goal by 20% and to raise $6,000 on behalf of StopLeukemia. Please help Rachael make this final push by contributing here. Thanks again to everyone for your continued support.
